Scott Wheeler

Scott is an SF native, and has been climbing trees all over town since he was three years old.

After graduating from Washington High School in ’95, Scott spent 4 burrito-less years in New England studying at Wesleyan University and raced back to SF as soon as he could.

Somewhere in 2001, Scott realized he was on the wrong side of the glass –  he decided to stop climbing the corporate ladder and began to climb trees for a living.

Since devoting himself to tree care, Scott has obtained his Qualified Applicators License, Certified Treecare Safety Professional certification, Certified Arborist credential, and is currently recognized as a Board Certified Master Arborist.  He is also a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists, and offers tree inspection and consultation work through his own company, California Heartwood LLC.

Scott has made several tree-related appearances on the evening news, chatted about city-tree life on NPR and contributed to an SF Chronicle report about street trees – and enjoys visiting local elementary schools to chat about trees with kids of all ages.

If he’s not immersed in all things trees, Scott can be found in his hammock looking up at them. Scott is in love with travel and is happiest exploring the world off-limits and out-of-bounds. He’s an avid nature photographer and writer, and makes a mean chicken piccata.

Scott’s favorite tree is the Maidenhair (Ginkgo biloba) “cuz they’re so weird and unique. Not directly related to any other type of tree or plant, but exhibit characteristics of angiosperms, gymnosperms, and even ferns… living dinosaurs that have barely changed in almost 300 million years!!  Tied w Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) cuz we’re both native Californians and I was married in a fairy ring of Redwoods. Love the bark and color contrast between the trunk and leaves when they’re lit up by the sun 🙂 also, their leaves are highly unusual and they’re just so….stately.”
