Josef Sikelianos, the founder of Urban Arborist, became an arborist out of a family tradition and a lifelong fascination with the natural world. What started as a one-man operation has now grown into a comprehensive tree service with highly skilled arborists and technicians with over 60 years combined Bay Area experience. Our teams are well-versed in the City’s unique and challenging landscape.
At the Urban Arborist, we begin with the view that your trees are part of an ecosystem. We use our experience to determine how best to treat that system as a whole in order to enhance each tree’s relationship to its unique setting, considering the surrounding landscape, buildings, micro-climates, and of course the humans that share that ecosystem. With an emphasis client communication and transparency, we look at each case to determine the best course of action in order to preserve your trees and your safety.

Living in trees of Montclair I have dealt with a couple other arborist in the area, and what I can say about the Urban Arborist is that these guys are really stewards of the trees. This is not a tree company that is going to come hack your trees apart, they are extremely knowledgable and take care with what they are doing – another reviewer said artful and I couldn’t agree more. Beyond that they are professional, reasonably priced, and leave your property clean. The other thing I appreciated is that while they give advice on general or additional tree maintenance, they are honest about what should be done now and what can wait. They are now officially my go to arborists.
Linda J.San Francisco, CA Yet another great experience with Urban Arborist! This time a huge catalpa tree fell down and I needed a quick response. Josef miraculously put a crew together within a day and dealt with the removal of this giant tree. I was traveling when the tree fell, but because of past experience with Urban Arborist, I could trust Josef and his crew to handle everything.
Josef also advised me, with no pressure, to consider pruning another very large tree, to avoid another accident. It was a big job, but again, the crew was timely, efficient, absolutely protective of other plants in the garden, cleaned up thoroughly and did a superb job. The newly pruned avocado is light and balanced – does NOT look like it had a bad haircut – and I couldn’t be happier. Also, the price was better than 2 other companies I’d checked.
It’s a good feeling to know I have a tried and true company I can always count on!
